Kristi Raik on Vikerraadio: New Trade Restrictions Between the US and China Would Have Serious Consequences for World Trade

On 28 June, Kristi Raik, Director of the Estonian Foreign Policy Institute commented on Vikerraadio, Estonian Public Broadcasting, news programme the upcoming G20 Summit in Osaka and said that tensions between the US and China will continue in the coming years and probably even decades.

According to Raik, it is important to monitor at the summit whether the US and China will manage to avoid further escalation of the trade war. “At the moment, there is also the danger that both the US and China will impose new restrictions on trade. This would certainly have serious consequences for world trade. Economic experts are worried that if this trade war continues to worsen, it could lead to a global recession,” she said.

Raik added that the G20 Summit tackles several topics where the US and Europe are divided, such as free trade, climate and Iran. These divisions create more space for authoritarian states such as China and Russia, Raik noted.
